Forspoken PC vs PS5: A clear, surprising choice


I caught some flak for saying that current-gen consoles can’t keep up with their performance in the next era of video games, but there’s still one unheard-of advantage that consoles have over PCs. square Enix forspoken PC brings PS5’s advantage to center stage.

Starting with the PS5 version, you have access to three performance modes: Quality, Performance, and Ray Tracing. Quality has a variable frame rate that never dropped below 30 frames per second (fps) in my testing. Ray tracing also has a variable frame rate that hovers around 30 fps and includes ray-traced shadows, but not ambient occlusion or reflections. Finally, Performance mode attempts to lock the game at 60 fps, occasionally dipping to around 55 fps, further reducing resolution and draw distance.

For resolution, the game uses dynamic resolution to attempt to keep the frame rate consistent. It hovers between 4K and 1440p, with the Performance mode going closer to 1440p and the Quality mode closer to 4K. These resolution differences can also have a big impact on the look of the game.

Notably, there are some significant artifacts in the ray tracing mode as it tries to reconstruct a 4K image. This is by far the weakest mode, not only because of the aggressive upscaling, but also because of the minimal visual impact of ray tracing. forspoken (More on that in the next section).

For testing, I used a PC equipped with a Ryzen 5 5600X and AMD RX 6600 XT graphics card. This machine is more expensive than the PS5, but it packs around the same power. You can watch the video above to see how it stacks up overall.

In place of Dynamic Resolution in the PS5 version, I used AMD’s FidelityFX Super Resolution 2 (FSR 2) for performance and ray tracing comparisons. I also kept the game at the standard graphics preset, which revealed some interesting differences between the PC and PS5 versions.

The PC version looks bad at first glance. The PS5 version looks like it prioritizes textures closer to the camera and uses an enhanced version of those textures. You can see the huge difference in stone quality above, with the PC version looking far less detailed.

These enhanced textures are available at a higher quality level in the PC port, but it highlights how the PS5 version handles them differently. In the same scene, you can see how much softer Frey’s edges are on the PS5. Also, the grass is blurry in the PS5 version while it is clear on the PC.

On the performance front, the FSR 2 does wonders with ray tracing for the PC port, allowing games to run at close to 60 fps. Similarly, with ray tracing off, the PC is able to maintain 60 fps, with FSR 2 in Balanced mode turned on, while the PS5 sometimes drops a bit.

The problem with PC is frame pacing. In quality mode, you can see how much stuttering there is, even though the average frame rate isn’t that far from the PS5. As I’ll dig into in the next section, the PC port of forspoken It never feels like it’s running smoothly, no matter how high your frame rate.

Another big area where the PC and PS5 releases differ is ray tracing. The PS5 supports ray-trace shadows, while the PC version supports shadows and global illumination. Unfortunately, neither does much. There hasn’t been much of an impact on performance, and I struggled to notice any difference in image quality.

It is possible that this is just a bug. Regardless, I recommend keeping ray tracing off on PC and PS5.

Major issues with the PC port

There are some major issues with the PC port of Forspoken. First and foremost is frame pacing. As you can see in the performance comparison above, an equivalent PC can reach higher performance than the PS5, but it doesn’t do so consistently.

I haven’t found massive stuttering issues, at least not on the scale of gotham knights either Alden Ring. There were a few stutters, but the bigger issue was inconsistent frame times. Even with 60 fps averaging, frame times will jump from 16 milliseconds to over 40ms in an instant, and back and forth. Worse the frame rate is inconsistent, so the window for frame time is constantly changing.

It’s easy to show a memory leak, but hard to test the effect. If your system doesn’t have a lot of RAM and play for hours on end, expect a steady decrease in performance as RAM usage increases.

There’s a big bump for the PC port of FSR 2 forspoken, But the game’s potential memory leaks and inconsistent frame pacing are hard to ignore. The PS5 version runs more smoothly, even though it occasionally drops below the target frame rate.

The good news is that the PC version doesn’t have too many advantages over the PS5. Ray tracing just doesn’t do anything, and although you can get higher frame rates, the game still caps out at 120 fps on PC.
