Intel Arch Alchemist: Specs, Pricing, Release Date, Performance

Intel’s first-generation Arc graphics cards are here – codenamed Alchemist. It’s in a bid to shift the balance Nvidia and AMD have maintained for decades, with modern furnishings like real-time ray tracing and AI-assisted supersampling. To get you up to speed, we rounded up everything we know about Ark Alchemist’s release date, price, specs, and performance.

Although Ark Alchemist cards are technically here, they are not widely available. Intel is rolling out these cards gradually. However, that is about to change, as Intel has officially unveiled the card during the Intel Innovation event and shared all the important details.

After a long wait and a lot of delay, Intel has finally announced the release date for Ark Alchemist’s desktop, named Ark A770. The GPU will arrive on October 12th, which is, incidentally, the same day as the new Nvidia flagship, the RTX 4090. Prices will start at just $330 for Intel’s own limited edition cards and may be higher for custom versions from Intel’s partners. ,

In the months leading up to the release of the Arc A770, Intel has emphasized that it plans to remain competitive in terms of pricing. This is its plan to beat the competition – yet a low price with decent performance as opposed to targeting the high-end enthusiast segment. For this reason, Intel has priced the A770 very competitively, and it made a strong statement telling gamers: “You should be disappointed.”

We don’t know when, or if, Intel plans to release the lower-end Arc A750 and Arc A580 for desktop. In all likelihood, at least the A750 will release on the same day, but Intel focused on flagships this time around.

Launching Ark Alchemist has been a daunting task for Intel. Intel officially launched Ark Alchemist at CES 2022, but only the mobile range. After that, Intel said more than 50 laptop and desktop designs are “coming soon,” but we haven’t seen too many yet. The company has confirmed that One The Ark Alchemist laptops have been shipping to South Korea, but even though it’s been a while, these laptops haven’t become widespread. However, you can find some of them globally.

Rumors suggest that the slip in the release date is the result of internal delays. Shortly after Intel’s CES keynote, the company removed the release window from the Arch Alchemist website. Rumors have spread that Intel has delayed the release over management issues. The cards were originally scheduled to launch in the first quarter of 2022, which Intel barely made up for by releasing the range on March 31.

Desktop GPUs suffered several delays, as well, with a moving launch window that surpassed Intel’s projections of “summer of 2022”. However, we now have a solid date and a very promising price to go with it.

Intel has now revealed full details for both the Ark Alchemist mobile lineup and the desktop range. While we’re not sure when some of these desktop GPUs will be available, we do expect them to launch alongside the flagships soon.

A look at the mobile range of Ark Alchemist GPUs:

Outside of memory size and power draw, it’s impossible to compare Ark Alchemist’s specs to AMD’s and Nvidia’s options. With 16GB of GDDR6 memory and a 256-bit bus, the flagship Arc 7 770M looks like it will line up with Nvidia’s RTX 3080 Ti mobile. AMD has no choice with that much memory.

On the lower end, the Arc A350M isn’t a direct competitor to AMD or Nvidia, at least based on the spec sheet. It’s a highly efficient discrete GPU, targeting 1080p and competing with integrated graphics or entry-level discrete GPUs like Nvidia’s MX450.

We can’t compare the specs, but reports following Intel’s announcement revealed that the Arc Alchemist GPUs have a higher transistor count than competing options from AMD and Nvidia. This may indicate higher performance for similar die sizes with Arc Alchemist, but it is too early to say for sure.

As for the Intel Arch Alchemist for desktops, although we’ve heard many rumors about GPUs targeting flagships from Nvidia and AMD, we now know that’s not the case. The Arc A770 can be compared to the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 Ti, and it only goes downhill from there. Intel is targeting the mid-to-entry level region this time around, but at least the pricing reflects that choice.

Intel Arch Alchemist Architecture

Intel’s Ark Alchemist cards are being built on chipmaker TSMC’s N6 node, a modification of the N7 node used on the AMD RX 6000 graphics card.

The basis of the Xe HPG is an Xe Core, consisting of 16 vector units and 16 Xe matrix execution (XMX) units with an L1 cache. Intel combines four of these Xe cores into a single render slice and adds a shared L2 cache between them, as well as dedicated ray tracing cores for each Xe core. These slices are what will separate the various Arc Alchemist cards.

Intel says it can add up to eight slices to a single graphics card, for a total of 32 Xe cores and 512 XMX and vector units. We don’t know how the future architecture will work, but Intel says the Xe HPG is a scalable architecture. In the future, we’ll see smaller, more efficient processes with more render slices on the card.

Intel Arch Alchemist Benchmarks and Performance

While the Intel Ark Alchemist desktop lineup isn’t here yet, we’ve seen several previews of its performance, both from Intel and from other sources. We should be able to test them ourselves soon, so we’ll be back here with our own results, but in the meantime, let’s take a look at how Ark Alchemist fared in the various benchmarks we’ve seen so far.

The initial hope was that the Intel Arc A770 might be able to target Nvidia’s RTX 3070 Ti, or even higher, with its performance. Intel has now confirmed that this will not happen and has compared the GPU to the RTX 3060 Ti. The Arc A750 has a similar set of features and can trade with the RTX 3060, while the Arc A580 can be expected to compete with the RTX 3050 or less.

For a while, we’ve had bad news mostly about the performance of the Intel Arch. Driver issues prevented the GPU from working well, and it also turned out that the GPU could always struggle in some games. This is because they are optimized for modern APIs like DirectX 12 and Vulkan, but not for DirectX 11 and older, which can make them perform poorly in older headers. Intel is aware of this and is actively working on it, but it has also decided to price the GPU competitively for that issue.

Simultaneously, Intel is demonstrating the performance of the cards, and it is clear about their capabilities. The cards have been displayed in games like cyberpunk 2077 And shadow of the tomb raider, reaching decent frames per second every time. We should soon be able to weigh ourselves in this matter after putting the card through a few benchmarks.

They’re here as far as mobile cards are concerned, but benchmarks are still pretty sparse. We’ve seen synthetic benchmarks of the Arc A770M and A750M, in which the flagship was able to compete with Nvidia’s RTX 3070. Intel itself has also released some official benchmarks for the cards, but vendor benchmarks aren’t always the best source. To assess performance. In these tests, the Arc A770M was faster than the RTX 3060 Mobile and the Arc A730M outperformed the RTX 3050 Ti Mobile.

We’ve also seen a YouTuber who was able to score a machine with the Arc A350M. Video shows the card managed around 90 frames per second (fps) overwatch at high settings.

Although not ideal, it’s important to remember that the A350M is the most entry-level GPU in Intel’s Ark Alchemist range.

Intel has shared some benchmarks for its A370M as well. The graph (below) only shows the card compared to Intel’s older integrated graphics, but the A370M maintains a respectable frame rate. For now, we’ll have to turn to leaks and rumors for any performance indication, but it won’t be long until the desktop range is released and the Intel Arc can be seen in its full glory.

Intel Arch Alchemist Overclocking

We have more concrete information about overclocking. Intel has confirmed that the Arch drivers will have a built-in overclocking utility, so you can push clock speeds beyond their rated spec. We don’t know what the overclocking tool will look like, but we expect it to match AMD and Nvidia’s offerings.

Intel’s Tom Peterson revealed that Ark Alchemist can do a particularly good job at overclocking without increasing power consumption. A significant overclock was achieved with virtually no additional energy costs.

In an interview with Gadgets 360, Intel said it is exploring a number of features for its drivers. The drivers will line up with major game releases, and the company is looking at features like gaming recording and streaming. That said, these features may not be available when the card launches.

Real-time Ray Tracing and Intel XeSS

Alchemist cards come with the latest gaming features, including support for DirectX 12 and Vulkan ray tracing, with most titles that support ray tracing available today.

With ray tracing, cards will eventually support Intel XeSS. It’s an AI-assisted supersampling feature that works similar to Nvidia’s Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS). Although Arch Alchemist graphics cards are here, Intel still hasn’t released XeSS — but the technology is believed to be coming soon.

Although similar, XeSS is not the same as DLSS. It looks like Intel took some notes from rival AMD and its FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) upscaling technology. Like FSR, XeSS works across a wide range of hardware, not just Intel graphics cards. In order to achieve widespread support and AI upscaling, Intel developed two software development kits (SDKs).

The first uses dedicated cores on Intel graphics cards, in the same way that DLSS uses Tensor cores on Nvidia RTX cards. It’s the full, rough XeSS experience, and Intel says developers can start implementing it in late August.

Another SDK uses the DP4a instruction, which is used in AI applications on recent Nvidia graphics cards and recent Intel integrated graphics. Intel says that this version has some quality and performance differences compared to the normal version of XeSS. However, this opens up much wider support for other hardware, which is great to see. This SDK is coming in 2021, but Intel didn’t say when.

As far as stacking up XeSS, DLSS, and FSR is concerned, we’ll just have to wait and see. Intel needs to do some major things for XeSS to be successful, and there’s still a lot we don’t know about the feature.
